IEEE In-Text Citation: Rules, Format & Examples
Your bibliography
0 sourcesIEEE In Text Citation uses a bracketed number, like [1], placed in the text at the point of reference. Numbers are assigned in the order sources first appear and match a numbered reference list. Reuse the same number each time you cite that source again.
What is an IEEE in-text citation?
An IEEE in-text citation is a number in square brackets that points to a full entry in your reference list. IEEE uses a numeric, citation-order system rather than author-date. The first source you cite becomes [1], the second [2], and so on.
Unlike APA or MLA, IEEE does not put author names or years in the running text. The bracketed number does all the work, keeping sentences short and technical. This style dominates electrical engineering, computer science, and telecommunications writing.
How do you format the bracketed number?
Place the bracketed number on the line, inside a normal sentence, with a space before the opening bracket. The citation goes before the closing punctuation, not after it. You can also make the number part of your sentence grammatically.
- End of sentence: Convolutional networks outperform earlier classifiers [3].
- As a noun: The method proposed in [3] reduces training time.
- Do not write “in reference [3]” or “in [3]” as literature [3]; simply “in [3]” is enough. Avoid “Ref. [3]” except at a sentence start.
- Repeat the source: cite the same number again, e.g. a later reuse of [3] stays [3], never a new number.
- Authors — first initials then surname, listed in document order
- Article title — sentence case, in quotation marks
- Source — abbreviated journal title (italic), volume, number, pages
- Date — abbreviated month and year
- DOI — the digital object identifier, when available
How do you cite multiple sources at once?
Cite several sources by listing each number in its own bracket, separated by commas, or use a dash for a continuous range. IEEE prefers separate brackets for non-consecutive numbers. Never bundle unrelated numbers inside one pair of brackets.
| Situation | Correct form | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Two or three sources | [1], [4], [7] | Each number in its own bracket |
| A continuous range | [2]–[5] | Sources 2, 3, 4, and 5 |
| Mixed | [1], [3]–[6], [9] | Single plus a range plus a single |
| Avoid | [1, 4, 7] | Not standard IEEE spacing |
How do you add page or equation numbers?
To point to a specific page, chapter, equation, or figure, add the locator inside the bracket after the number and a comma. This is common when citing books or long reports. Use the standard abbreviations p. for one page and pp. for a range.
- Single page:
[6, p. 42] - Page range:
[6, pp. 42–45] - Chapter:
[6, ch. 3] - Equation:
[6, eq. 12] - Figure:
[6, Fig. 4]
How is the reference list ordered?
The IEEE reference list is numbered in the order sources are first cited, not alphabetically. Each number sits in its own set of square brackets, flush left, with the entry text aligned in a hanging style. Every citation number in the text must match one, and only one, list entry.
| Source type | Reference-list pattern |
|---|---|
| Journal article | Initials Surname, “Title,” Abbrev. Journal, vol., no., pp., Month year, doi. |
| Book | Initials Surname, Title, Xth ed. City, State/Country: Publisher, year. |
| Conference paper | Initials Surname, “Title,” in Proc. Conf. Name, City, year, pp. |
| Website | Author/Org, “Title,” Site. Accessed: Month Day, Year. [Online]. Available: URL |

These entries show the format behind each in-text number. Italics mark journal, book, and proceedings titles. Match the punctuation and abbreviation exactly, since IEEE abbreviates journal words and months.

How accurate is this guide, and its limits?
These rules follow the current IEEE Reference Guide and are stable across most IEEE publications. Still, IEEE style has real edge cases a short guide cannot fully cover. Confirm any unusual source against your target publication’s author kit.
- Journal title abbreviations follow the IEEE Transactions lists; a tool cannot always guess the correct short form.
- Some conferences and societies use house exceptions to spacing or author limits.
- Preprints, datasets, standards, and patents each have their own entry pattern not shown above.
- Our generator formats the structure, but you should verify author initials, page ranges, and DOIs against the original source.
Frequently asked questions
Does IEEE use author names in the text?
No. IEEE in-text citations are numbers in square brackets, such as [4]. Author names and years never appear in the running text, unlike APA or MLA. The number alone links to the full reference list entry.
How do I cite the same source twice?
Reuse the original number every time you cite that source again. If a work was first cited as [2], it stays [2] throughout the paper. IEEE never assigns a second number to a source already in the list.
Where does the bracket go relative to punctuation?
The bracket goes inside the sentence, before the final period or comma, with a space before it. Write “improves accuracy [5].” not “improves accuracy. [5]” and not “improves accuracy[5]”.
How do I cite several references together?
List each number in its own bracket separated by commas, like [1], [3], [6]. For a continuous run, use a dash: [2]–[5]. Avoid combining numbers inside one bracket such as [1, 3, 6].
Is the reference list alphabetical in IEEE?
No. IEEE orders the reference list by citation order, the sequence in which sources first appear in the text. The first cited source is [1]. This differs from the alphabetical lists used by APA and MLA.
How do I add a page number in IEEE?
Put the page locator inside the bracket after the number and a comma, like [6, p. 42] for one page or [6, pp. 42–45] for a range. You can also cite chapters, equations, or figures the same way.
