Privacy Policy

Citations Generator collects as little data as possible. You don’t need an account, and the citations and bibliography you build stay in your own browser.

Last updated: 18 July 2026.

Information we don’t collect

You don’t have to register, sign in, or give a name, email address, or payment details to use any generator on this site. We don’t sell personal data, because we don’t collect it.

Your bibliography stays on your device

When you generate citations and add them to a list, that list — along with your chosen citation style and light/dark preference — is stored locally in your browser using localStorage. It lives on your device only and is never transmitted to us. Clearing your browser data removes it.

Look-ups you trigger

Autocite is optional. When you paste a DOI, ISBN or URL, or search for a title, that query is sent to trusted third-party services so we can retrieve the source’s details:

  • Crossref and doi.org — to look up works by DOI.
  • Open Library — to look up books by ISBN or title.
  • The web page you enter — fetched once to read its citation metadata.

These requests contain only the identifier or terms you enter. If you fill in details manually instead, no such look-up is made.

Server logs

Like most websites, our hosting provider automatically records standard technical information (such as IP address, browser type and pages requested) in server logs. This is used to keep the site secure and running, and is not used to personally identify you.

Cookies and tracking

We don’t use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies. Preferences are kept in your browser’s local storage as described above. If we add privacy-respecting analytics in future, we’ll update this page first.

Children’s privacy

This site is intended for a general audience, including students, and does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the site evolves. Material changes will be reflected by the “last updated” date above.
